From Pinterest Pioneers to AI Innovators
Lance Riedel and Nigel Daley, renowned for their work in search discovery, have transitioned from Pinterest’s ranks to co-founding Vantage Discovery in 2023. Their extensive experience culminated in the launch of Pinterest Shopping, where they honed techniques to enhance personalized search experiences. This venture piqued the interest of Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, leading to a significant investment in Vantage Discovery.

Pioneering Personalized Search Engines
At Pinterest, Riedel and Daley leveraged large language models (LLMs) and image identification AI to revolutionize how search engines handle online shopping. Traditional search engines rely heavily on keyword inputs to produce ranked results. However, the duo’s innovations at Pinterest introduced a deeper layer of personalization. By tracking users’ interactions, their search engines learn and adapt to individual preferences, thereby delivering more tailored shopping results.
For instance, a user with a penchant for BoHo clothing will receive vastly different search outcomes compared to someone interested in streetwear when querying for “a dress for a fun night out.” Vantage Discovery enhances this personalization further by integrating image recognition. Users can employ the search engine to find related products by simply asking, “show me more like this,” and the engine can pull recommendations based on their Pinterest profiles.

Custom Vector Databases: The Heart of Vantage Discovery
Vantage Discovery’s core innovation lies in its custom vector database. This technology combines semantic understanding of user queries with insights into personal style, generating highly personalized and precise results across millions of items within milliseconds. This approach ensures that users receive the most relevant search outcomes, enhancing their online shopping experience.
Moreover, Vantage Discovery allows merchants and brands to control the ranking of search results. This flexibility enables businesses to optimize results based on custom models tailored to meet their specific business metrics.
Initial Success and Significant Backing
Launched in early 2024, Vantage Discovery quickly attracted notable clients such as Cooklist, Koodos, West.co, and Bookopolis. While the exact revenue figures remain undisclosed, the startup is already generating income and collaborating with one of the world’s largest retailers.
Biz Stone’s investment stemmed from his need for an intelligence platform supporting RAG (retrieval augmented generation) and advanced search features for another venture. Impressed by Vantage Discovery’s capabilities, Stone not only invested $16 million in a Series A round but also joined the board. This round included contributions from other prominent figures such as Jony Ive, former Apple chief design officer, and various investment firms including Lobby Capital, The Hive, Future Positive, and Common Metal.
Expanding Horizons in Merchandise Tooling
Beyond personalized search engines, Riedel and Daley aim to delve deeper into “merchandise tooling,” which involves ranking results for online stores and search engines. They envision incorporating AI to streamline this process, traditionally influenced by merchandisers. Their goal is to minimize the manual labor involved in ranking and allow AI to handle these tasks efficiently.
“This is a space that has been around for a long time with merchandisers putting their thumb on the search scale and influencing it in certain ways,” Riedel noted. “That’s important and needed by retailers, but we think we can remove some of the grunt work.”
Future Prospects
From my perspective, Vantage Discovery is poised to redefine the landscape of personalized online shopping. By combining advanced AI techniques with a deep understanding of user behavior, Riedel and Daley have created a robust platform that not only meets current market needs but also anticipates future trends. With the backing of influential investors and a clear vision for innovation, Vantage Discovery is set to become a major player in the e-commerce sector. The integration of AI in merchandise tooling could further streamline operations for retailers, offering a seamless shopping experience for consumers and enhancing business efficiency.
