Sékr, a prominent mobile app tailored for outdoor enthusiasts and campers, has introduced an innovative AI tool named Copilot to assist users in planning their road trips. Available on both the updated website and app, this new feature aims to streamline the travel planning process for over 100,000 users.
A New Era for Road Trip Planning
Founded in 2016, Sékr has carved out a niche by helping the “van life” community find campsites equipped with necessary amenities such as showers, restrooms, overnight parking, and free Wi-Fi. Beyond this, the app facilitates connections among travelers for shared outdoor activities like rock climbing and skiing.
The introduction of Copilot marks a significant enhancement to the app’s capabilities. By leveraging advanced natural language processing and integrating data from user reviews and ratings, as well as publicly available sources, Copilot generates customized travel itineraries. This innovative approach allows users to bypass the often tedious and time-consuming trip planning process, offering a more efficient and enjoyable way to discover new destinations.
Background and Evolution
Sékr’s journey has been eventful. Acquired by van company Peace Vans in December 2023, the startup underwent a leadership change with Harley Sitner at the helm. Sitner, a former product manager at Microsoft and a longtime user of the app, stepped in after learning the founders were planning to wind down the app due to funding challenges in late 2022.
Under Sitner’s leadership, Sékr has not only revived but also innovated. The launch of Copilot is a testament to this revival. The AI tool combines proprietary user data with sophisticated algorithms from OpenAI’s GPT and Meta’s Llama, among others, to deliver detailed and personalized road trip plans.

Features and User Experience
Accessing Copilot is straightforward. Users can navigate to the “Trip Planning” tab on Sékr’s website or app and respond to a series of prompts about their travel preferences and destinations. The tool then generates a detailed travel itinerary, which includes camping destinations, dining stops, and outdoor activities, all of which can be edited to suit individual preferences.
Copilot’s strength lies in its ability to reveal hidden gems. For example, it might direct travelers to a roadside taco truck in Baja reputed for its exceptional cuisine or to a secluded spot on Bureau of Land Management land offering breathtaking views. Such recommendations stem from the collective wisdom of Sékr’s active user community, enhancing the authenticity and uniqueness of the travel experience.
Enhancing the Outdoor Experience
Sékr’s commitment to enriching the outdoor experience extends beyond Copilot. The app, available on both iOS and Android, offers free basic features, while premium features can be unlocked for $4.99 per month. Premium subscribers gain access to offline maps, event discount codes, and unlimited messaging and searching capabilities.
The app’s development has been supported by significant seed funding. In 2021, Sékr secured $2.25 million in a funding round led by Storyteller Overland, with contributions from Backstage Capital, Techstars, Ad Astra Ventures, Crescent Ridge Ventures, and Andy Ballester, co-founder of GoFundMe.
My Perspective
From my point of view, Sékr’s introduction of the Copilot AI tool represents a significant leap forward in travel planning technology. The integration of user-generated data and advanced AI algorithms offers a highly personalized and efficient way to plan road trips. This tool not only saves time but also enhances the overall travel experience by uncovering unique and off-the-beaten-path destinations.
However, there are potential downsides to consider. Over-reliance on AI for travel planning might reduce the spontaneity and sense of adventure that often accompanies road trips. Additionally, the accuracy of AI-generated recommendations depends heavily on the quality and quantity of user data available.
As I see it, the benefits of Copilot far outweigh the drawbacks. By harnessing the power of AI, Sékr is poised to transform how we approach travel planning, making it more accessible, enjoyable, and tailored to individual preferences. This innovation underscores the potential for technology to enhance our connection with the great outdoors, fostering a more connected and adventurous community of travelers.
